What we believe about Marriage

We acknowledge God’s creation of humankind as male and female and the unchangeable standard of Christian marriage between one man and one woman as the proper place for sexual intimacy and the basis of the family. We adhere to the biblical teaching of lifelong fidelity in marriage and abstinence for those who are not married.

Pandemic Restrictions?

In the event of pandemic restrictions or other unforeseen circumstances impacting wedding plans, we will be happy to discuss the arrangements, including potentially re-scheduling the wedding, or discounting. Please use the Wedding Enquiry form.

Bluestone Church Building

Christ Church Hawthorn’s bluestone church building is a very beautiful, historic and well-located venue for weddings. It is one of the oldest churches in Melbourne, with a rich history dating back to 1853.

Refreshments, reception

Our Memorial Hall, on the same property and immediately adjacent to the historic church, is available for serving refreshments immediately after the ceremony and/or for your whole wedding reception.

Who can marry at Christ Church?

In line with the requirements of the Anglican Church of Australia, weddings at Christ Church are between a man and a woman. Couples who are not current members of our church are welcome to enquire, remembering that a wedding at Christ Church is a Christian ceremony. The remarriage of divorced people may sometimes be approved.

Who conducts the ceremony?

A minister of Christ Church Hawthorn, authorised by the government to conduct weddings, may be available to conduct the wedding service. Alternatively, another authorised minister - known to the couple - may perhaps be welcome to conduct the service.

Pre-marriage Preparation

Taking marriage seriously as God intends, we strongly recommend The Marriage Course. If a Christ Church Hawthorn minister will conduct the wedding, he will work with the couple not only to plan the wedding, but also to help prepare for a good marriage, seeking a good understanding of Christian marriage and a good foundation for a lasting relationship. If another minister will conduct the wedding, it is expected that that minister will likewise help the couple prepare for a good marriage.

More Information?

Every wedding is unique, and every couple’s circumstances and requirements are unique. We warmly encourage you to arrange to meet with one of the ministers at Christ Church to discuss the possibilities for your wedding.

To get a feel for the church, and to meet one of the ministers, you may like to attend one of our Sunday services.
